How to Survive Disneyland in the Rain

Rain in the forecast for when you are going to Disneyland? Don’t let it get you down! We are providing you with some of the best tips on how to survive a day at Disneyland when it’s raining.

Being California natives, we know it rarely rains in Southern California. Most people tend to think that rain will put a damper on their trip to Disneyland, but they couldn’t be more wrong! This is the perfect time to put on your rain gear and take advantage of no crowds and short lines.

Tip#1

If there is rain in the forecast, be prepared! If you can purchase items outside of the park, you will save tons of money that can make up for all of the churros and dole whips you purchase while at Disneyland.

The first must-have is rain gear. We didn’t want to deal with umbrellas, so we purchased Disney ponchos on Amazon. They were a lot less expensive than the ones in the park, plus you stand out because they are way cuter!

Tip #2

We wore baseball caps. Even though the ponchos have hoods, they don’t protect your face from getting wet quite as much as the baseball cap did. As ladies, who wants to have your mascara running all down your face?

Tip #3

Puddles are unavoidable in the rain. Your shoes will get wet. Try to take shoes that won’t be too uncomfortable when they get wet. We wore two pairs of socks into the park and packed extra socks for the locker. Our feet stayed dry and warm all day.

Tip #4

Okay this sounds crazy, but it actually works! Take a dog potty pad. Some rides get wet in between the previous passenger getting out and you being able to sit down. Put the potty pad absorbent side down before you sit. I know it sounds crazy, but it really does help from having soggy jeans which is no bueno! They are compact enough to be folded and put back in your pocket after each use.

Tip #5

Planning your day according to the day is also important. Some of the outdoor rides will close due to the rain like Radiator Springs Racers or Incredicoaster at California Adventure and Autopia and Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland, among others. So try to ride those before the rain starts if you can.

Tip #6

When it does rain, look for rides that are mostly indoors. Pirates of the Caribbean happens to be one of our favorite rides and it is indoors.
Space Mountain, Star Tours, Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters and even the Tiki Room are also great places to stay dry when it’s raining. California Adventure has attractions like Monsters Inc., Soaring Around the World, Toy Story, Ariel’s Undersea Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout where you can stay mostly dry.

Or you can do the opposite. You already have gear on to keep you dryer than normal, why not ride the water rides? Splash Mountain and Grizzly River Run will have no line, so take advantage of it.

These are just a few of our tips for how to enjoy your day at Disneyland and California Adventure when it is raining. You don’t want to delay your trip due to rain, because a lot of other people may do the same thing, which will mean longer lines after rainy days. We enjoyed our rainy day because the lines were so short, and we got on so many rides, that we actually left the park before closing which is highly unusual for us.
